A philosopher once said, "Body is an instrument of the Self". Body is the material entity while the Self is the conscious entity experiencing the material world. Nobody has ever seen the Self but its presence is felt somewhere inside, somewhere behind our own eyes. You see others as material beings while you see yourself through an entirely different perspective. When you look inside you see the Self & not always your material body.
YouTube is a video sharing platform bought by Google in
2006. At that time nobody knew that this platform will gain such a huge
popularity and it will become a source of fame and money to so many. YouTube
has now become a place where you can watch entertainment videos, promote your
brand or learn through video tutorials.
A website is a set of related web pages located under a
single domain name. A domain name is simply your website name. A domain name
represents an entity or organization having control over the website. YouTube is itself a website having control on
its services and users. This article is about which one is more profitable for
you. Earning money through sharing videos on YouTube or writing & publishing
content on a website? Making money through web applications and mobile
applications is a completely different thing which requires a lot of coding
skills. This article is for those who want to make money by publishing content.
So, let’s cover various aspects and find out which one is
suitable for you.
1.
Investment
Whether you want to start a YouTube channel or become a
website owner, some investment is required based upon your goals. Let’s say you
want to start a YouTube channel then you will require:
a) A Camera – Sony, Nikon, Canon or your very own Smartphone
b) Video Editor – Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere Pro, Filmora
c) Knowledge, Talent & Loads of Creativity to Engage your viewers
People can start their YouTube channel with zero investment. You don’t need to pay anything to start a YouTube channel. Some people simply use their old smartphone, start filming with that and simply upload without even editing it. Then, simply they start earning money through Google Adsense when they are able to get enough viewers (Min. 10,000 viewers required to start earning).
Starting your own website is not free at all. It does require you to spend some bucks. To have your own website you should have:
a) Domain Name – Which you can Purchase from GoDaddy, Hostgator, Bluehost, Namecheap or Google Domains. Cost of a top level domain (TLD) is somewhere from 10 to 15 USD while the new generic top level domain (gTLD) is even much more than that.
b) Hosting – Now, after you bought the Domain Name, you also require the
hosting. Hosting is simple where your files are stored and run while Domain
hosting is from where you got the name registered. The domain name server (DNS)
contains the host address where the required files are stored.
c) Writing & Presentation Skills - You cannot simply write long paragraphs that are filled with loads of words. You need to present your text in a very organized way so that it is easy for the reader to read and locate the important points. Proper highlighting of important text is required and while the reader is willing to read, he should find your content both interesting & useful.
d) Responsive Design, Images created by you or that are free to use, SSL certificate and Firewall are also required for a good user experience and to keep your website secure.
Now, I hope you know why people are running behind YouTube these days, because it’s less technical and easy for an individual to start a YouTube channel.

Skills Required
Skills you require depends upon what type of content you
want to create. It does not require any skills if you run a YouTube channel
where you simple sit and talk in front of the camera and tell people about your
hobbies or favorite color. Posting pictures and telling people how much you
love your best friend or what you had for breakfast on a wordpress.com site also
does not require any skill. I am talking about something which is useful,
creative and interesting.
If you want to have a YouTube channel which offers people entertainment or infotainment then your must require:
a) In-depth knowledge about the subject your are talking about or skill to entertain other people
b) Ability to present things beautifully and how to edit your videos in a more presentable way
c) Imaginative mind which can do some creativity, bring new type of ideas and unique content.
If you are simply posting videos about almost anything which is popular then you will end up being an average YouTuber making a few hundred dollars per month.
Almost anybody can have a YouTube channel, there is no requirement to be from a technical field. But being a website owner is kind a different thing. Skills required to become a website owner:
a) Knowledge about basic coding – With CMS, people create beautiful websites these days. But a website is not just about having a good design. Sometimes, to add a desired widget or to have a custom layout design, you need to know how to edit code and use CSS (cascade style sheet).
b) How the internet works - Without which it is almost impossible to have a good number of visitors per month. Either, the bounce rate will get higher or you will get difficulty in achieving a sustainable traffic. Therefore, a website owner should know about things like backlinks, web crawling, Meta tags and etc.
c) Writing Skills – Website having their own blogs and forum tend to appear more in search engines. A website can provide almost any type of service but in order to inform others about your service, you need to have a well written content that gives people information about your site. If you are running a blog site, then you should have a talent of writing long articles that are written well i.e. articles with enhanced readability and rich in content.
d) Cloud & Database – This is only required for those, who are
providing some online web application. It requires a lot of technical knowledge
regarding how to set up a web app and how to integrate it with a database.
Websites which generate quotes, make gif images and etc. need to have a
database where they save all the incoming data and sometimes they also sell the
content created by you on their site.

Growth
One thing is for sure. If your YouTube video goes viral, you
and your YouTube channel could become famous in a few months if not in a few
days. YouTube works on algorithms. As soon as you upload a video, YouTube uses
the tags and description to find out who would like to watch your video. If
YouTube finds out that watch time (or average view duration) of your videos is
high then YouTube will automatically suggest it to more and more people
thinking that your videos are good enough and should reach to more people. It’s
like YouTube wants the good content to reach more and more people no matter if
your channel is new or old. This is because YouTube earns through your videos.
Therefore, YouTube wants that as soon as people visit youtube.com, the site
should be loaded with content which can engage more & more people to watch
videos for a maximum period of time.
Growth of a website depends upon many factors. It may take somewhere from 2 months to 2 years to have a good number of users that could help you in generating a fair amount of income each month. If you are getting do follow links from an old and established site, then your site can rank higher on search engines and generate more traffic and income. You can also generate traffic from social media by creating some viral post, but that usually harms the website’s image and also leads to decrease in your CTR and CPC due to which you won’t be having a good income despite of having a good traffic. Therefore, it is advised to promote your site by fair means and creating content which is useful to people. A site can rank higher in search engines, have a good CPC & income if the site is rich in high quality & useful content. This is good for a long term growth and stability.
Even if you are not getting links from a reputed site, your site can rank well if proper Meta tags and keywords are used. You can try guest blogging as well where you can find people looking for similar type of content and then they will get reference to your site.

4.
Audience Interest
Usually people watch YouTube to feel entertained. Majority
of traffic on YouTube looks for gaming, entertainment and music videos. People
when get back home after work or school simply want to feel relaxed and
entertained. If you are creating videos in such category, then there are high
chances of you getting more subscribers and viewers. These days YouTube publishers
are trying to entertain the viewers while they are giving some information or
teaching. This way, people get a better feeling while watching the video. Everybody
wants entertainment and people will hardly refuse the entertainment if they are
getting while learning.
On the other hand, people search on Google if they want any information. Either
they want to learn something or trying to have a deeper understanding about
something. If you are reading content on a website, you and your eyes are
definitely not relaxing. You are reading, your mind is working and you are
trying to store the information in your head. It’s not a music where you could
just close your eyes and simply listen and then go to sleep. When people feel
frustrated, they hardly search for a spiritual advice
rather they watch a movie or a T.V. serial or listen to their favorite songs.
Therefore, people having very few but good entertainment or music videos on their YouTube channel earns much more than channels and websites having a good number of informational content.

5.
Fame
There is no such rule that only a YouTube channel could make
you famous. In order to be famous, you should be successful. Does not matter if
you are a successful website owner or a YouTuber, you will get some level of
fame. People run about that fame, which means how many people know your name or
have seen your face. Fame means that people should know what you do and value
you and your work. A lot of people try to become famous through YouTube but
that fame has no meaning at all. If you have not done something unique and
different, then people can forget you anytime soon. Suppose, your YouTube
channel gets banned, then what? Nobody is going to subscribe you again because
they know what you do to get famous. Usually girls make reaction videos to
become famous. But this type of fame gets nothing but some income via Google AdSense.
Well, it’s okay. If you need money then you do what’s required. We are not
discussing how to make your living in this article. We are focusing on what you
should do in order to be successful depending upon your talent and skills. If
you have that, you need not to depend on anyone else. You can start from being
a content publisher to an influencer to a famous celebrity.
6.
Return
If you are a very successful YouTube channel with almost
around 1 million subscribers and a sustainable traffic then you can earn around
$5-10k per month. The figures may vary depending upon the type and availability
of ads for your videos. A YouTube channel can earn through showing ads by
Google AdSense next to the videos or by endorsing someone’s brand in the
videos.
But a website can earn through multiple ways. Showing ads by any ad network, affiliate links, referral links and brand endorsements. You can have an online business where you provide some service to people and charge for that. If people really want that service then you can earn much more than what you earn by showing ads and other links. There is not end limit of how much you can earn through a website. Successful website owners providing some online service earn from $20-50k. I am not talking about giant companies, but websites which are run by a group of very small people. As I said, YouTube is a website itself and therefore, it allows you to earn through a limited number of ways. But you can do anything at your own website.
But it depends upon your skills where you can be successful. Even after
publishing your content and protecting your site, you should keep on promoting
your site so that the traffic grows while YouTube will automatically get you
new visitors if your videos are good enough.
YouTube earns through Google AdSense. Google AdSense shares 68% of the revenue of what it earns by the advertisers with its publishers. Since, YouTubers earn by publishing content on YouTube, almost 50% of the earning is taken and publishers get only 34% while website owners get 68% due to which the CPC rates are higher for websites. Apart from that the ads shown on a content rich website are 4 to 5 times more. But the fact that, “safe CTR for a YouTube channel is 10%” and that of a website is just 1% balances everything. So, it does not matter if you are a YouTuber or a Website Owner, you might be earning the same amount if the number of visitors are equal.

7.
Stability
Complaints about famous YouTube channels getting suspended
are not new. Channels are getting suspended all the time. Sometimes channels violating
all the terms and conditions stays and those following it get suspended. Once
suspended, it is up to them if they want to re-instantiate it or not. Sometime
they do it in a week or do it after a year when you send a number of review requests.
But your website is your property and nobody can take that from you. If you are
not using any CMS then you are not bound by any contract or TOS due to which
you are free to use your website by any means. However, to earn from an ad
network, your site should be eligible and abide by its rules. But still you do
not have to worry that one day you will woke up to see that you are left with
nothing. You can have multiple sources of income at your website, even if you
loose one you would be able to earn through the others.
